The Institute offers a Certified Respiratory
Fitness Educator program for healthcare practitioners, human service
professionals, therapists, fitness consultants, life coaches, peak
performance trainers, breath workers, and educators. The offering embraces the Institute mission of bringing behavioral
physiology to the practical attention of professionals and ultimately of
people at large.
Few people, lay or professional, know that
(1) breathing directly regulates body chemistry, including pH, electrolyte
balance, blood flow, hemoglobin chemistry, and kidney function, and that (2)
breathing is a behavior subject to the same principles of learning as any
other behavior, including the role of motivation, reinforcement, emotion,
attention, perception, and memory.
Millions of people have unwittingly
learned dysfunctional breathing behaviors that compromise respiration and
acid-base balance. These habits may
cause, trigger, exacerbate, and perpetuate a wide variety of emotional
(anxiety, anger), cognitive (attention, learning), behavioral (public
speaking, test taking), and physical (pain, asthma) changes that may
seriously impact health and performance.
Typically these symptoms and deficits go “unexplained,” or are
mistakenly attributed to other causes.
Restoring good respiration through learning adaptive breathing
habits can bring about immensely beneficial physical, mental, and
behavioral changes.
The Institute has developed CapnoLearning®, a learning program for helping clients
overcome dysfunctional breathing habits, based on self-regulation of carbon
dioxide, the key player in moment-to-moment acid-base regulation. CapnoLearning is based on the principles
of phenomenological exploration, behavioral analysis, behavior
modification, biofeedback, cognitive learning, and awareness training. This
is the basis of the Institute certification program.
The clients of certified educators learn
about how they have learned to breathe, how their breathing affects them,
and how to effectively self-regulate breathing behavior based on learning
rather than prescriptive exercise.
